Cost of Living

The average international student in Australia spends around AU$600-AU$800 per week on accommodation, food, clothing, entertainment, transport, and telephone. While this is a realistic guide, it is important to remember that individual circumstances will vary by location, course, and lifestyle. Further information on the cost of living and studying in Australia can be found on the Study Australia website Living and education costs | Study Australia.[1]

[1] We strongly encourage all students to consider the full costs of living and studying in Australia before completing the enrolment form for any of our courses.

ACCOMMODATION

Students can opt to live in single, shared, student, or private accommodation. If students are looking for a place to stay, they can look at our partnership with Co-Living Melbourne.

Further information on living options in Victoria can be found on the Study Melbourne website Types of accommodation | Accommodation | Living here | Study Melbourne.

Health Insurance

It is important to remember that international students studying in Australia are required to arrange health insurance before they arrive in Australia. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a health insurance for international students and their dependents which helps students to meet the costs of medical and hospital care that they might need while in Australia.

Further information on OSHC can be found at Overseas Student Health Cover | Visa information | Study Melbourne.

Transport

Travelling around Melbourne is very easy as we have a well-planned and efficient public transport system. To use public transport in Victoria students will need a Myki card which is used to purchase rides on all trains, trams, and buses as well as on some regional services. International students studying in Victoria can purchase an International Student Travel Pass that provides eligible students with 50% discount on public transport.

For further information on getting around please consult this handy guide: A Guide to Public Transport in Melbourne | Getting around | Living here | Study Melbourne.

Money and Banking

The currency in Australia is the Australian Dollar. Students will need to have an Australian bank account to receive international money transfers and pay bills, such as rent, for their student accommodation.

Some Australian banks allow students to set up a bank account whilst overseas before arriving in Australia, more information on the banks in Australia can be found at Banking for Overseas Students in Australia | Overseas Students Australia – Study in Australia
